A selection of vegetable seeds being handed over to the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) for free distribution to farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through its Research and Development Division, has handed over 450 lbs of vegetable seeds to the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) for distribution to farmers free of charge. This handover took place on November 19 at the Ministry’s Hope Gardens Headquarters in St. Andrew, and forms part of the Ministry’s immediate recovery response following the recent passage of Hurricane Melissa.
The seed donation includes pumpkin, cow peas, corn, sorrel, and West Indies red pepper. These will be distributed across all thirteen RADA parish offices, as well as to the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), with priority given to the parishes most affected by the hurricane. In support of sustainable agriculture, the Ministry has also included untreated seeds to benefit the organic farming sector.
These seeds will play a pivotal role in our farmers restarting agricultural activities and contribute to national food security. Over 400 farmers are expected to benefit, with approximately 160 acres (70 hectares) targeted for cultivation.
This handover marks the first distribution of seeds from the Research and Development Division to RADA and forms part of a broader long term strategic plan to rebuild a more resilient agricultural sector. The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to supporting farmers in rebuilding and restoring their livelihoods, as part of a broader effort to revitalise the agricultural sector.
