Howard Simpson, Regional Extension Officer in the Capture Fisheries Division, and Shellene Berry, Senior Director of Extension Services for Capture Fisheries at the NFA, presented a fisher from Alligator Pond with a roll of mesh wire to support his recovery following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, on Friday, November 14, in Alligator Pond, Manchester. 

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, through the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), has taken decisive action to support fishers in Alligator Pond who were severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. In a recent distribution effort on Friday, November 14 in Alligator Pond, Manchester, 35 local fishers received essential fishing gear, including 59 rolls of mesh wire, to aid in the restoration of their livelihoods.

The mesh wire will be used to repair and replace fish pots damaged or lost during the hurricane, enabling fishers to return to sea and resume their primary source of income.

“This intervention is more than just replacing gear; it is about restoring hope and economic stability for our fishers,” said Dr Gavin Bellamy, Chief Executive Officer of the NFA. “By getting these fishers back on the water, we are not only helping them provide for their families but also ensuring a continued supply of fish for the local market and the country at large.”

This timely initiative was made possible through the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). It underscores the NFA’s ongoing commitment to targeted recovery efforts that address the immediate needs of fishing communities while building resilience against future climate-related challenges.
