Onion Development Programme

This programme is a sub-programme of the Ministry’s Production and Productivity Programme. It targets specific products over the medium term that have competitive and/or comparative advantage to use as alternative or direct substitute to imported products. This will enable the country to reduce loss of foreign exchange and build industries with an already built in market. Thoughout this medium term to the next, the Ministry will be seeking to be self-sufficient in several crops namely onion and Irish potato.

As such, the programme promoted the establishment of an onion development plan which promoted the increase in onion production in designated agro-parks and other suitable production zones. The programme is laying the foundation for the expansion of the onion sub-sector, which is being implemented on a phased basis as a project involving both government aided agro-parks in partnership with private sector stakeholders, community-based organisations and NGOs. This is complementing the ongoing Irish potato development projects in the agro-parks and select production zones.
