Oyster Product Development

The Oyster Sector in Jamaica has been faced with marketing difficulties, which has led the Fisheries Division to create an Oyster Product Development project to identify alternative means of introducing the product on the market. The first by-product identified to be sold commercially is an Oyster Punch.

The Agricultural Development Project (ADP) has allotted J$800,000 to the Aquaculture Division to:

  1. create a safe rearing facility in Bowden, St. Thomas; and
  2. produce a quality standard for the drink product.

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) has done laboratory tests on the formula to identify its nutritional value and shelf life, as well as to ensure that the product is safe for consumption. Taste tests have been carried out, and SRC is now in the process of the correcting the proportions of ingredients to make the punch ideal for consumers.

No date has been set for the launch of the oyster punch commercially.
