Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism
The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) is a development initiative between Caricom member states. The CRFM seeks to promote the sustainable development and conservation of the region's fish stocks. The Jamaican government's committed to plan has seen the mechanism being an on-going project, since the mechanism was introduced in 1991.
The Fisheries Division is the primary administrator of the development plan. The government has budgeted J$28,264,560.00 for the implementation of the project.
Objective(s)
The Jamaican interpretation of the CRFM focuses on the provision of fisheries statistics and information, research and resource assessment, and the facilitation of stakeholder participation in sustainable fisheries management and development. This includes activities geared towards greater collaboration with the NGO community through workshops and meetings.
The redevelopment of the National Fisheries Advisory Council is also a priority activity, for which monthly meetings and planning sessions are organized. Finally, this programme continues to provide local counterpart support to the Regional CRFM annual programme activities.
Achievements
This programme has been successful in all its objectives. Plans also are in place to upgrade the database that is currently being used.
