Fishing Beach Rehabilitation Project - 30 beaches
The fishing industry employs over 30,000 people directly. The Ministry of Agriculture acknowledges the fishers’ contribution to the economy and as such has implemented the Fishing Beach Rehabilitation Project.
Objectives
The project seeks to improve:
- the working conditions of fishermen, which should lead to greater productivity within the sector; and
- food safety for fish fishers and consumers alike.
Cost and Sponsorship
The Fisheries Division has been given the task of administer the estimated J$348 million project. During this Financial Year 2008 - 2009, the project will begin rehabilitating some 30 fishing beaches, at a cost of nearly J$100 million. This programme will include the installation of environmentally-friendly toilet facilities, vending and washing facilities, water supply, storage sheds, and an area for basic processing and signage.
In addition to the Ministry of Agriculture, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) provide sponsorship for this development project.
Achievements
Tender proposals for engineering firms have been sent out and two (2) companies have responded.
