National Minerals Policy

The Industrial Minerals (i.e. the non–bauxite) sector saves Jamaica an average of US$55 million annually, however, it continues to be underexploited based on the traditional emphasis placed on the bauxite industry.

Development of a National Minerals Policy
In order to establish a policy framework that will create an enabling environment for the promotion and development of the minerals sector, the Ministry has formulated a National Minerals Policy in an effort to:

  • modernize and diversify the sector; and

  • pave the way for its harmonious existence with competing interests in the wider economy.

The draft Policy document, which has undergone consultations with key stakeholders, is now ready for presentation to the Cabinet.
